What
is the NewFoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program? (NL PNP)
Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada’s easternmost
province, has emerged as a notable economic player in the country.
The province comprises two distinct regions: Labrador,
which is connected to the mainland, and the island of Newfoundland. The NLPNP,
Newfoundland and Labrador’s Provincial Nominee Program, allows prospective
immigrants possessing the skills and experience sought by the province to
obtain a provincial nomination.
Overview
of the Newfoundland and Labrador PNP:
The Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee
Program (NLPNP) has been active since 1999, being among the earliest PNPs to be
established. Similar to other PNPs, this program aims to attract more
immigrants to the province to meet economic and labor market demands.
The NLPNP targets skilled workers, entrepreneurs, and international
graduates who possess the necessary skills, experience, and education to
thrive in the Atlantic province. Alongside the PNP, Newfoundland and Labrador,
through the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP), is increasingly welcoming
immigrants. The AIP is a streamlined immigration program allowing employers in
the Atlantic provinces — New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia,
and Prince Edward Island — to hire foreign nationals.
The province aims to welcome 1,200 new immigrants
annually and plans to increase this number to 1,700. The NLPNP includes one
enhanced category, the NL Express Entry Skilled Worker category, while the
remaining categories are base categories. An enhanced category is aligned with
the federal Express Entry system, allowing quicker processing. In contrast,
base categories are not aligned with Express Entry and typically have longer
processing times.
