Sponsoring Your Parents and Grandparents for Canadian Residency

Looking to reunite with your family and build a life together in Canada? The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) can help Canadian citizens and permanent residents sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residency in Canada. Here's a comprehensive guide to navigating the process:

Eligibility for Sponsors

  • Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
  • Citizenship Status: You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Residency (for Permanent Residents): If you're a permanent resident, you must currently reside in Canada. If not, you must be willing to return once your parents/grandparents become permanent residents.
  • Financial Capability: You'll need to demonstrate sufficient income to financially support your sponsored family members for three years after their arrival. The minimum income requirements are set annually by the Canadian government.

The Application Process

  1. Expressing Interest: The first step involves submitting an "Interest to Sponsor" form during designated intake periods announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
  2. Random Selection: IRCC conducts a random draw to select potential sponsors from the pool of submissions. If chosen, you'll receive an invitation to apply.
  3. Submitting a Complete Application: Once invited, you'll need to submit a complete sponsorship application package including:
    • Proof of your Canadian status and residency (if applicable)
    • Civil status documents (marriage certificates, birth certificates)
    • Documentation proving your relationship to your parents/grandparents
    • Proof of income meeting the minimum requirements for the past 3 years
    • Police certificates from countries where your parents/grandparents have resided for 6+ months as adults
    • Medical certificates for your parents/grandparents
    • Digital photos

For Parents and Grandparents

  • Medical Examinations: They must pass a medical exam.
  • Security Checks: They will undergo security checks.
  • Financial Support: They should be prepared to demonstrate they will not rely on social assistance.

Upon Approval

  • Permanent Residency Status: If the application is approved, your parents/grandparents will be granted permanent residency in Canada.
  • Arrival in Canada: Once approved and all checks are complete, they can travel to Canada as permanent residents.
